The COVID-19 Pandemic as a Catalyst for Change in the Online Distribution, Presentation, and Monetization of Cultural Content

The aim of this project, combining legal scholarship and media industries studies, is to evaluate the effectiveness of new digital presentation and distribution strategies in selected creative sectors (film, music, theatre) and to propose solutions to the problems faced by Czech creators, producers, and distributors during the pandemic in connection with the online distribution and monetization of cultural content.

The main outputs of the project are a research report and a set of policy-oriented recommendations focused on 1) removing obstacles related to rights clearance for the streaming of films, concerts, and theatre performances; 2) analyzing possible forms of targeted state support for cooperation between domestic producers and distributors and multinational VOD services in the areas of co-production, acquisition, and distribution; 3) providing guidance for creators on how to properly license and monetize content on online platforms.

CIRG – the Cultural Industries Research Group focuses on research into cultural and media industries, particularly on current issues, challenges, and conflicts arising from tensions between intellectual property law, the business models of cultural industries, the digitalization and platformization of cultural sectors, and changing consumer habits. The group’s name is an acronym of its English title, Cultural Industries Research Group. CIRG is an informal association of experts from media studies, intellectual property law, media law, media ethics, cultural economics and cultural management, sociology of culture, and data analysis. The group operates on the basis of project-based funding through applied research projects (TAČR, NAKI, EEA and Norway Grants, OP JAK Intersectoral Cooperation), basic research projects (GAČR, ZIF Bielefeld, OP VVV Excellent Research, DFG), as well as contract research (State Cinematography Fund, Association of Audiovisual Producers).
