Analysis of the Conditions of Czech Consumers’ Movement Between Sources of Legally and Illegally Distributed Audiovisual Content
Iveta Jansová, Jakub Macek, Alena Macková, Štěpán Žádník
The aim of this research report is to analytically summarize the key findings of a qualitative study of Czech convergent audiences, with a focus on the motives that lead respondents in the research sample to choose between the various currently available sources of audiovisual content. Conducted by a team from the Faculty of Social Studies at Masaryk University in 2018 and 2019, the study builds on a longstanding discussion regarding the ongoing transformation of media audiences, media digitisation and convergence, and the related tension between producers and legal content providers on one side, and illegal content providers on the other. The research findings, briefly summarized in this report, address two central questions in this discussion: Under what conditions and for what reasons do contemporary consumers of television and film content choose unofficial sources for this content? Conversely, what motivates them to prefer official sources?
The research report was produced within the project Research on the Impact of Existing Legislation and the European Commission’s Digital Single Market (DSM) Strategy on the Czech Audiovisual Industry: Evaluation of the (Copyright) Legal System and the Preparation of Cultural Policy within the DSM, supported by the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic (Project No. TL01000306).
